Product Description

"Dream a little, Kulu, this world now sings a most beautiful song of you."

This beautiful bedtime poem, written by acclaimed Inuit throat singer Celina Kalluk, describes the gifts given to a newborn baby by all the animals of the Arctic.

Lyrically and tenderly told by a mother speaking to her own little Kulu; an Inuktitut term of endearment often bestowed upon babies and young children, this visually stunning book is infused with the traditional Inuit values of love and respect for the land and its animal inhabitants.

A perfect gift for new parents.

From School Library Journal

Baby-Toddler—This picture book adaptation about a new child born in the Arctic succeeds in its new board book form. While the language is sophisticated and the text is longer than most found in board books, the lyrical quality will capture children''s attention. The animated illustrations dominate each page and complement the text. This purchase should be considered to add diversity and elegance to board book collections.

Review

Debut author Kalluk presents a series of warm affirmations for a newborn (the name "Kulu" is an Inuktitut term of endearment). Neonakis''s artwork...offers a genuinely folklike sensibility and strong, dynamic compositions.

“[A] lovely bedtime book . . . Young children will be captivated by the stunning beauty of the Arctic world embracing little Kulu.”

“Highly recommended”

“This is a terrific book for those who have a newborn in the house… And for those of us who just need a book that rights the world for us, that reminds us of that world in all its richness.”

“. . . [P]lenty of material for both parents and children to enjoy.”

“Complementing Kalluk’s words are gorgeous illustrations by Alexandria Neonakis.”

Love it. This is a precious book to read to kids, I have read it to both of my girls in different stages of their infancy. It has a lovely rhythm, illustrations and message. This story although at first it might not sound or flow like a children’s story, it is meant to be a poem, hence the rhythm. This book has a warm message of respect and love.

Beautifully illustrated

This book is beautifully illustrated. I don''t like the writing as much as I like to painting. The words don''t flow as smoothly. But for a bedtime children''s book, it''ll do fine.
While it''s nice to have the larger pages, I wish I had gotten the board book version.

This book is beautiful and we love it. Unfortunately we ordered 7 of them for our program and they were all warped and bent. We needed to distribute them to families so we did not return them but I was very disappointed in being sent damaged goods.

The graphic work is in this book is quite beautiful, creative and touching. What I found most attractive though, as an adult, and a parent of a preschooler was the mutual respect and admiration from nature to a human being and viceversa, plus a simple and nice way to introduce native Alaskan culture (Inuk). Without it being poetry, I found it quite poetic. There is a constant encouragement of the child to know all the great things she/he can be.
A beautiful gift as well.

This is the most beautiful children''s book I have ever seen. I received it as a gift for my son before he was born, and since then I have given it to several friends who have had babies. The illustrations are amazing and the accompanying text always makes me tear up. I would highly recommended this book to anyone. I noticed that one of the other reviewers commented that they "did not like the story", but it''s important to note that this is not a story, it is more of a welcome prayer. It emphasizes our connection to the world around us. Another reviewer commented that this book was not written in english, however, I have ordered this book from amazon twice and both times received an english version. Arrived on time, well-packaged, and in excellent condition.

The Book looks really lovely, and is in excellent condition, but I can''t read this book. I didn''t realize that this book wasn''t in English, but was in Inuktitut. I bought these books for the daycare I work at; we are trying to finds books and other resources that better represent indigenous cultures in our country. I was planning to read all 4 of the books I bought to the children at my daycare centre. If anyone knows where I can get an English version of this book I would greatly appreciate you letting me know. I''ll buy another copy of it and just keep this one as a souvenir. The children at my daycare centre are preschool ages 2-6 yrs. Thanks

Not only does this book have the most beautiful illustrations, but it also has the most beautiful words. This book most successfully describes the love that a mother has for her child. I read this book to my children to express my love for them, but it sometimes makes me emotional! It is also a fantastic book to be incorporated into a classroom. This book can be the Hook to begin a large variety of Lesson Plans or Units, and it is an excellent resource for Indigenizing the classroom in an honest, respectful and meaningful way.
